Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James

Death comesIf you enjoyed reading Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, you may like this “sequel” by a well-known mystery writer.  (If you’ve never read Pride and Prejudice or seen a film version of it, you’ll want to become familiar with its plot before reading this book.)

Death Comes to Pemberley begins in 1803, six years after the end of Pride and Prejudice. At Pemberley, Mr. Darcy’s estate, life is calm.  The family’s main concerns are the plans for a ball and the marriage possibilities for Darcy’s sister, Georgiana.  Suddenly, just as the family members are ready for bed, they hear an unexpected coach lurching down the road at a dangerous speed.  As Darcy goes out into the howling wind to see what is happening, he hears a woman shrieking.

Soon Darcy finds a dead man in the estate’s woodlands, and a family connection of his may be the murderer.

  1. Great fan of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (I studied it, and enjoyed studying it- 17 years ago). Death Comes to Pemberley sounds interesting, although I tend to be a bit skeptical when a sequel is written by another author.
