Signs in the Blood by Vicki Lane

Signs_in_the_bloodIf you enjoy novels set in the North Carolina mountains, you won’t want to miss this mystery.  When middle-aged widow Elizabeth Goodweather sets out to talk to as many neighbors as possible in a search for information about what has happened to her friend Birdie’s son, she meets members of a snake-handling church, a hippie community, and a militaristic group. Were the two men whose bodies are found in the river the victims of accidents or of murder? Did members of one of these communities kill them? Elizabeth also wonders if she will find love again. Will it be with a friend of her deceased husband or with a snake-handling minister–or will she remain a lonely widow? A subplot is the story of Little Sylvie, a thirteen-year-old girl who lived in a cabin near Elizabeth’s home many years before and was forced into marriage with a much older man. Lane, a resident of the North Carolina mountains, gives us a fascinating picture of the area, past and present.
